Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori acknowledges an important leadership transition

Tumu Whakahaere Ngahiwi Apanui welcomes Dr Julian Wilcox as the new Toihau/Chair of Te Taura Whiri.

Julian's experience leading organisations and contributing at governance level will be a tremendous asset to Te Taura Whiri he says. As well as his expertise in te reo Māori, Ngahiwi welcomes Julian's stewardship and looks forward to working with him to continue growing the strength of te reo Māori for all New Zealanders.

"At the same time, I extend my deepest gratitude to Professor Rawinia Higgins for her outstanding leadership, vision and service as Toihau since 2018. During her tenure, first as a Commissioner in 2015 and later as Chair, Rawinia has been a tireless advocate for te reo Māori, helping to strengthen its status, visibility and use across Aotearoa and on the world stage. Her contribution to the revitalisation of te reo Māori will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

"E te toka tū moana, e Rawinia, tēnā koe mō tō manaakitanga, tō mātauranga me tō manawanui ki te reo Māori. E mihi ana te whare ki a koe.

To Julian, nau mai, haere mai. We wish you every success as you begin this new chapter of leadership."
