Language Normalisation

Normalisation embeds te reo Māori as a natural feature of everyday life in Aotearoa. Normalisation shows te reo Māori speakers that te reo Māori is valued and supported outside of their language-speaking communities, such as kōhanga reo, kura kaupapa, and the marae. Normalisation provides te reo Māori with the greatest opportunity to succeed. It encourages more use of the language and creates an environment that fosters the growth of te reo Māori, New Zealand's language.

Language Planning

Normalisation doesn’t just happen; it takes careful planning. Plans set out what to do, how to do, when to do it and who should be doing it. When planning for language normalisation/revitalisation there are 5 elements that should be considered:

Get started on your plan

Creating a language plan for your organisation can take anywhere from 6 months to a year.

This phase can take 4-6 weeks. You will go through a discovery phase to find out what you have in place, what capability you have, and what resources are available to you. We have created a short online assessment tool to get you started.

This phase can take 6-8 weeks. You will set your goals, assign responsibility, define timeframes, allocate resources and define your measures. Success depends on buy in. Ensure you consult with your staff before taking it to your leadership for signoff. We have created another tool to help you create your first plan.

Now you’re ready to put things into action! Allow 9-12 months for this phase. Remember to encourage and celebrate success - small wins matter. Monitor progress and share your learnings.

Allow 6-8 weeks for review and refreshment of your plan. Have your goals been achieved? Did you meet your timeframes? What went well? What didn’t? Has it made an impact?
