Plan for te reo in your workplace
Evidence-based language planning revitalises Indigenous and endangered languages.
Planning ensures that your efforts to revitalise te reo are as effective as possible by strategically setting your 'big picture' goals and involving all stakeholders in your efforts.
Why create a Māori language plan?
Through developing and implementing a language plan, your organisation will:
- Contribute to the revitalisation of te reo Māori
- Enhance your organisation’s relationships with Māori
- Strengthen your identity as a New Zealand organisation
- Increase your organisational health by growing a confident and capable workforce
- Meet other organisational goals that are enhanced by the use of te reo Māori such as Crown-Iwi relations, diversity and inclusion and cultural responsiveness
Get started on your plan
Creating a language plan for your organisation can take anywhere from 6 months to a year.
Self-assessment can take 4-6 weeks. You will go through a discovery phase to find out what you have in place, what capability you have, and what resources are available to you. Use our templates to benchmark your progress:
Now you’re ready to put things into action! Allow 9-12 months for this phase. Remember to encourage and celebrate success - small wins matter. Monitor progress and share your learnings.
Allow 6-8 weeks for review and refreshment of your plan. Have your goals been achieved? Did you meet your timeframes? What went well? What didn’t? Has it made an impact? You can use our surveys below or create your own:
