Coming soon: te reo Māori courses for the public sector

Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori is launching pilot te reo Māori courses for the public sector!

Te Maihi Karauna sets out one of our audacious goals: by 2040, one million New Zealanders will have the ability and confidence to talk about basic things in te reo Māori. We know that part of achieving this goal means providing a safe learning space for beginners of te reo Māori in the public service.

These free pilot courses have been designed as te reo lessons for public servants with little or no te reo proficiency who are keen to learn in a safe, fun environment. The courses have been deliberately designed through a kaupapa Māori lens underpinned by second language acquisition theory and language learning planning principles.

There are two eight-week courses in the pilot, with two, two-hour lessons each week (four hours total split over two days). You will need to be available for those four hours each week for the full eight weeks to be eligible. The pilot courses commence on 2 May 2022 and 1 August 2022. If you’re successful, you’ll be selected to participate in one of these courses. They will both be held online.

The benefits for participants include:

  • Improving their te reo proficiency
  • Gaining NZQA level credits
  • Learning via a facilitated online course from te reo Māori professionals
  • Being in a safe learning environment to ask questions and make mistakes
  • Improving te reo proficiency in the public service.

The criteria for registering for these courses are:

  • Participants must have little or no proficiency of te reo Māori (beginner level)
  • Participants must work in the public sector
  • Participants must be available for four hours a week, for the full eight weeks of the course (no partial participation)
  • Participants must complete a pre-evaluation survey and a post-evaluation survey
  • Participants must have a device and internet to take part online

Places are limited, so make sure you register soon!

You will be notified if your registration is successful or not soon after registering. If you’re successful, you’ll be sent the calendar invitations for your course as well as a link to the pre-evaluation survey to complete.
